Frequently asked questions

About OneGammon, the dice, the computer and the rules.

Is OneGammon free?

Yes. Every game is free, there's nothing to buy and nothing to download.

Do I need an account?

No. Open the page and play. Your match in progress is kept on your device, not on an account.

Are the dice fair?

Yes. Every roll comes from your browser's cryptographic random number generator, the same kind used for security, and nothing changes the dice to help either player. The Dice tab beside the board counts each player's rolls, doubles and average pips through the match, so you can check for yourself.

How strong is the computer?

Normal judges every legal play by the position it leaves and makes sensible doubling decisions; it's a solid opponent for most players. Easy uses the same judgement with deliberate mistakes, for learning.

Can I play with a friend?

Yes, on one device: choose Pass and play and take turns. Playing a friend online with a link is coming soon.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. OneGammon works in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, and the board adjusts to the screen.

What happens if I close the page?

Your match is saved on your device. Open OneGammon again in the same browser and it carries on where you left it.

What is the doubling cube?

It raises the stakes. Before rolling, a player may double; the opponent takes, and the game is worth twice as much, or passes and loses at the current stakes.

What is the Crawford rule?

In a match, the first time a player gets within one point of winning, the next game is played without the doubling cube. OneGammon applies it for you.

What are a gammon and a backgammon?

If you win before your opponent has borne off any checkers, it's a gammon and scores double. If they also still have a checker on the bar or in your home board, it's a backgammon and scores triple.

Can I take a move back?

Yes, until your turn ends. The exception is a forced play: it is the only legal play, so there is nothing to change. With Finish my turn automatically switched on, your turn ends about a second and a half after your dice are used, or at once if you press Done.
